Are there any New Year’s Day traditions in Uganda?

In Uganda, New Year’s Day is celebrated with a focus on family, relaxation, and prayer. Many Ugandans start the day by attending church services, where they give thanks for the past year and pray for blessings in the new one. Some churches hold overnight vigils on New Year’s Eve, known as "crossover service”, where people gather for prayers, worship, and celebration. After church, families come together for meals, often preparing special dishes like roasted meat, matoke (steamed banana), and rice. 

In addition to family gatherings, Ugandans also embrace the outdoors, spending the day visiting friends, enjoying picnics, or relaxing at scenic locations such as Lake Victoria and national parks. Community sports events, like football matches and bike rides, add a lively touch to the celebrations, while beach outings provide a serene way to enjoy the holiday. These traditions reflect Uganda’s warm, community-oriented spirit as people celebrate new beginnings.
